What is Scanlation?
Scanlation is the process of scanning, translating, and editing manga (Japanese comics) for distribution, usually by fans, to an audience that doesn't speak Japanese. This process involves several stages and a team of people or just one, each with specific roles to ensure the final product is high quality and true to the original work.
Raws
Raw scans are the original Japanese manga pages. High-quality raws are essential because they provide the foundation for the entire scanlation process.
Cleaning and Redrawing (CL/RD)
Cleaning removes the Japanese text and imperfections from the raw scans, while redrawing redraws the artwork where the original text was covering the art. This step ensures the pages look clean and correct.
Translation (TL)
Translators convert the Japanese text into the target language, preserving the original meaning and nuances. Accurate translations are crucial for conveying the story and characters authentically.
Typesetting (TS)
Typesetters place the translated text into the cleaned and redrawn pages, making sure it fits naturally within the speech bubbles and other text areas. This ensures the manga is easy to read and visually appealing. Play's a crucial part on how manga is read.
Proofreading (PR)
Proofreaders check the translated text for grammar, spelling, and consistency errors. This step ensures the dialogue flows naturally and is free of mistakes.
Quality Control (QC)
Quality controllers conduct a final review of the entire scanlated manga, checking for any remaining errors. They ensure the final product meets high standards and provides a smooth reading experience.
